sometimes, when we are particularly low on groceries,
it starts to get to me.

and then i get to it.

i clean out the fridge. check what's leftover, what's got to go.
i clean out the cabinets. ditto.
i clean off the counters, and the shelves, and the stove top.

i find half a bunch of radishes and the last tomato, and that's my late lunch.

i pull a few cans from the top shelf,
and assemble all the ingredients i can come up with
to make a pot of chana masala.
a double batch.

i find a box of brownie mix, and even though we're out of butter,
i use canola oil instead. seems to work just fine. looks ok, at least.
i put the brownies away under a tea towel to save for later.

i slice up a few oranges and make a humongous bowl of popcorn. just salted, this time.
i peel what carrots are in the bottom drawer of the fridge and cut them up;
i'll put them out for the kids before dinner, alongside some hummus left from the other night at the beach club.

i get started early enough to make brown rice,
and find an almost full bag of elbow noodles, just for good measure.

i take out the last pizza dough from the freezer, just in case.
the just in case is just in case somebody extra comes by at dinnertime;
there's just a little sauce left and enough mozzarella (from the same beach club dinner).
i always want to be ready and able to invite that somebody extra to stay.

tomorrow there will be a big run to the store, and the wednesday market.
but today, i feel industrious, efficient. satisfied.

i like making do. because really, when i think i've got nothing
and start looking around,
i find
i really have enough.

i really have everything i need.
