sometimes it takes a road trip to realize you bring home with you wherever you go.

i got up at a ridiculous hour in the morning today.
the one cat we had wrangled inside for the night woke me up,
and i thought, why not?
why not get a head start.

the other cat came running in right away when i opened the door, and i've shut her in the house now; yesterday morning she took down a cardinal's nest. i can barely think about it. she stole two babies right from under the mama and ran, dropping them under the forsythia next to the porch.
tim grabbed her and put her downstairs and stood gaping, wondering, in the back yard. how do we make this right?

i'm not sure we could.

i turned back to the pancakes and flipped. i'm not coldhearted, but i couldn't bear it, couldn't help. what i could do was get girls fed and off to school. that i could do.

today it will be too hot to cook much after ten a.m., so i am making muffins now to send with lindsey on her field trip to the zoo. it's too hot for the zoo, i think. but she'll want to go.

it's probably time for me to go wake some people up, to start the day.
these quiet hours have been good for me.

enjoy this first of june.
