as i'm sure i've mentioned,
i have brothers,
but no sisters.
well, not exactly. but some close approximations.
i went to my parents' empty apartment today.
they are down in florida until spring is securely settled up here.
still on the fridge in clear plastic magnetized frames are photos of our entire family. dozens of them.
one stood out, took me by surprise.
out of the corner of my eye, i couldn't remember having that photo taken.
of course not.
not my brother brian.
and her cousin.
there they were. younger versions-but of course so very different-of me and my brother.
smiling out on the lawn by the lake in new hampshire last summer.
my brother brian called tonight. he's going fishing with his son,
and maybe we'll have fresh-caught fish for dinner when they come down on sunday.
we'll be here with a pretty large sampling of brothers and cousins that night.
but my parents will be down south, waiting out winter,
with a separate sampling of daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
we're all spread out.
my thoughts always turn to who and how and where we will all be later,
years from now,
when these girls of ours, who i can pretty much reach out and place a hand on at any given non-school hour at this point,
are all spread out.
who will we all be?
us, i suppose.
but of course so very different.
